My dad's 1949 8N will barely raise implements off the ground these days. A while back he had the pump rebuilt, but that doesnt seem to help matters. Years ago it was very, very slow in raising up, but now it is quicker but just doesnt go up very far. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what the problem may be? What is the proper viscosity hydraulic fluid for this? or is it oil?thanks for any help you can give..

the oring and back up ring on the piston that lifts the hitch are probably bad ....

Yes, old o-rings are good suspects. I don't know if the 8N's had position control 3ph's or not. However, if my hitch didn't lift all the way but had decent lift speed, the first thing I'd look at the position control rod adjustment. ....

I have a 1952 8N that over the years has devloped a weaker slower 3PH movement. The problem with mine is the O-ring as Tom has identified. The fact that your 3PH will not go up as high as it used to my be due to the O-ring also.
The oil used to operate the 3PH is the same oil that lubricates the transmission and rearend. The manual recommends you use Ford's hydraulic oil. The transmission/rearend takes 5 gallons of oil. There should be a dip stick for the transmission oil level, I think it is on the right side right near were the rear axle housing joins the transmission case.

I just happened on a similar question for a Jubilee over at Yesterday's Tractors. Responses indicated that position height adjustment is possible but requires a special jig. Another response said a cam follower pin was the problem 90% of the time. ....
